Adventure by Souleye Review

Introduction: So Souleye decided to release some new music. Well, yesterday (Jan 10th 2012) was that day. Well, granted, it’s not ALL new music, it’s still stuff that hasn’t been released by Souleye in a proper form before. I usually get pretty excited when Souleye comes out with new music as I loved the VVVVVV soundtrack. You can pick it up at Souleye’s site for $10 USD and preview it at his bandcamp page.

Notes: The mass majority of the album is either chip-tunes or quasi-chip-tunes.

The Tunes:

A Hero’s DestinyPacing Energy (Max Confidence) and Follow The Line are a little on the slow epic side, but Pacing Energy makes up for it in melody.

While Flullu Blobbo Lolz has pretty good melodies in it, it just doesn’t to seem to have the energy or intensity of the rest of the album.

The Pulsen edits from the original VVVVVV soundtrack are Potential For Anything (Pulsen Edit)Predestined Fate (Pulsen Edit)Positive Force (Pulsen Edit)Pressure Cooker (Pulsen Edit)Predestined Fate and Pressure Cooker don’t quite live up to the original, but Potential For Anything and Positive Force sit well with their new dance style edit.

I didn’t think Souleye could top the music in original soundtrack VVVVVV, but Piercing The Sky is by far the best track that has appeared on the VVVVVV soundtracks. Just being better than the rest of the songs on VVVVVV is a huge feat in it’s self. You’ll just have to listen to this track to appreciate the awesome that it delivers. I think the original arrangement is better than the  (Pulsen edit) though, but only by a small margin.

My Frank Soul starts out slow and average, but towards the end it picks up and gives you a neat melody.

Alone (Without You) is something you don’t usually hear from chip-tunes these days. It’s a slow somber tune with a lot of heart to it. Quite the interesting listen.

Final Thoughts: While the selection for the starting song wouldn’t have been the one I would choose, the album is pretty darn good. One thing Souleye can do is put a lot of emotion into a chip-tune song that has been tracked which quite the amazement. Souleye does not disappoint with Adventure as it has plenty of great tracks it that you’ll spend hours upon hours enjoying. Even if you don’t like chip-tune music, this is an album for everyone. I would suggest getting some sock to pant leg restraint system as Piercing The Sky will completely rock your socks straight off your feet. Highly Recommended.

The Good:

Great chip-tune music filled with emotion.

The Bad:

Nothing to speak of.

Favorite Tunes: Piercing The SkyUntulia (Pulsen edit)Alone (Without You)
